90th Anniversary of the Battle of Arras (WWI)

A lot of events for this anniversary  this week-end : hikes, lectures, military parades, shows... Among these events, the Canadian Armed Forces' Parade down the streets of Arras ( 300 Canadian soldiers), promises to be a high point on Easter weekend.

For a diversion offensive on Monday 9th April 1917, at 5:30 AM, following an intensive four day bombardment, the British First Army made up of four Canadian divisions, launched their assault on Vimy ridge (not far from my village). The first two days of the Battle of Arras werez highly successful. This rapid advance forced the Germans into a srtategic retreat. However the arrival of large numbers of reinforcements meant that vigorous counterattacks were launched starting on the 14th April, curbing the British offensive. However the result of the battle of Arras were by no means insignificant. The land seized pushed the combat zone back around 10 km and the town of Arras was opened up.

When visiting the Vimy memorial, ... you're in Canada! This place, which was inaugurated in 1936, lies at the heart of a vast hundred hectares site granted to the Canadians by the French Government. The taking of Vimy Ridge by the Canadians in April 1917 was one of the major episodes of the battle of Arras. Most of the Canadians know about Vimy which marked the birth of nation for a young country like Canada compared to "old" Europe. The imposing monument pay tribute to the 66,000 Canadian soldiers who died in France during the conflict and bear the names of 11,285 men whose bodies were never found.

Next Monday, at 4:00 pm, Canadian and French people will gather at the Canadian national memorial, with the presence of the Queen Elizabeth II, to witness the dedication of the newly restored memorial and to honour the memory of their olders who died during the historic battle of Vimy ridge.

Saint-Laurent-Blangy : The site of the second German necropolis was chosen in the heart of the April 1917 battlefields. After the war, the bodies of 21,350 non-identified soldiers were placed in a huge ossuary, raising the number of buried soldiers to 31,939.
